When exercise and eating healthy are not enough for people to maintain a healthy body weight, there are surgical options to losing those harmful and unwanted pounds.

"Excess weight – a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more – puts people at high risk for acquiring life-threatening illnesses such as heart disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes," said Lisa Hawver, MD, a board certified general surgeon specializing in weight loss procedures. "The sad reality is that obese individuals live predominantly shorter lives. Fortunately, they can take steps to alter that reality."

Missouri Ranks 12th among the Most Obese State in the Nation. To inform obese and overweight people in the area about surgical options in weight loss, Dr. Hawver will host seminars from 6:30 to 7:30 Wednesday, June 22, and Monday, June 27, in Classroom A in the Education Department at the St. John's Mercy Medical Building, 851 E. Fifth St. in Washington and from 6:30 to 7:30 Thursday, June 30, at the Warrenton Fire Protection District, 606 Fairgrounds Road in Warrenton.  "In addition to talking about the types of weight loss surgeries that are offered at Mercy Bariatric Center, we will explain the commitment that is required, who is a good candidate, the risks and benefits of surgery and the costs," said Dr. Hawver.

Dr. Hawver offers minimally invasive and laparoscopic weight loss procedures including gastric bypass surgery, Lap-Band gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy at Mercy Bariatric Center in Washington. Many health insurance companies assist with the costs of bariatric surgeries. Financial assistance may be available to those who qualify. Future informational seminars at various locations are being planned. For more information about bariatric surgery or to reserve a seat at one of these three seminars, call Cathy Hume, Bariatric Coordinator at 636-239-8878
