Different day, different river...

One of the reasons I am attracted to Washington is the river. It is a spiritual place to me, a canvas of unlimited beauty and a sign of God's power and grace.

When I was in college, I saw a film of the great photographer Edward Steichen. He was retired and living in the country somewhere. Almost every day he would set up and take a photograph of a tree in his yard. He took it from the same place on his deck and with the same lens every day. When a slideshow of the images was shown, the tree changed with the light, the seasons, and mood.

That same year (1978) I saw the Monet exhibit at the St Louis Art Museum and witnessed the breathtaking beauty of the master painters hand. Claude Monet painted the same thing over and over at different times of the day and year. Haystacks, a Cathedral, a Bridge, the River near his home. Not all of his work was in this vein, but the impact it had on me continues to this day.
