I LOVE to photograph food and have done so for advertising, sales materials, editorial and corporate purposes. From 1986 to 1994 I  was the corporate photographer for Pet Incorporated, a Fortune 500 specialty foods company that counted Old El Paso, Progresso, Underwood and, of course, Pet Milk among its many brands.

I've been taking photos of dishes served to me in restaurants for almost 20 years as a tourist kind of thing and although the photos are not often great, they are fun to do and remind me of experiences in places from Fresno, CA to Playa del Carmen, Mexico to Highland, IL which is interestingly the place that Pet got started as The Helvetia Milk Condensing Company in 1885.

Sometimes I take the photo because the dish is great, sometimes the light is great, sometimes the people I'm with are great, sometimes the location is great. Today was a trifecta; the atmosphere was great, the food was great, the beverage was great. Did I get 'great' into this paragraph enough?

My wife Wendy and I both have a fondness for Mexican food, so when we went to El Charro in Washington today we sensed something good was afoot. The decor is terrific, the staff is wonderful and they have Coca-Cola which is a MUST at a Mexican restaurant. The menu is extensive with a variety of dishes and even a selection of vegetarian offerings. The standard chips n salsa that they bring to the table were fresh and flavorful, as was the queso that we ordered.

I had the Shrimp Nachos pictured below, my son had  the Jalisco Special, our friend Jim had the Pollo Chihuahua and Wendy had the Speedy Gonzalez combination plate. All were served fresh and hot in a short amount of time. Our chips and beverages were replenished numerous times and each member of the staff was polite, cheerful and nice to talk with.

So, we had excellent food, service and atmosphere. El Charro is now my Mexican restaurant of choice in WashMO and I hope that you try it. Tell our terrific waiter Umabaldo that I sent you. Go. Go now!
