Red light cameras are assisting the City of Washington Police Department in ticketing drivers who run red lights at two high-traffic intersections in Washington, Missouri. The cameras are located at Highway 100 and Highway 47 and at Highway 100 and Route A/Jefferson. The cameras went "live" on March 9th, 2008 after a warning period where violators were issued warnings for red light infractions. This period also provided time for necessary adjustments to be made to the camera system and the processes used by the police department. In the April 7th, 2008 Washington, Missouri City Council meeting, Chief Kenneth Hahn noted that the city is averaging around 7 citations issued per day. According to Chief Hahn, the average number of warnings issued during the warning period was "about 15 a day." Shown below is video of a violation occurring on westbound Highway 100 at Highway 47. As can be seen in the video, the westbound lights have turned red prior to the second vehicle entering the intersection. Additional photographs available to the department provide high-resolution photos of the vehicle's license plate for identification purposes. While the video shows rainy weather, Chief Hahn noted during the April 7th City Council meeting that drivers must "have your speed for the conditions and be able to stop in time for those conditions". Red light cameras were covered in previous articles on WashMo.com: "Red Light" Cameras Installed and Red Light Cameras in Washington, Missouri - "On or about March 8th".
