MERS/Goodwill is joining an effort to help United States soldiers stay safe. The national non-profit program known as "Beanies for Baghdad," was established five years ago as a way for soldiers to build positive bonds with the people in war-torn countries. In a country where having a toy is a rarity, the simple act of passing out Beanie Babies® or other small toys to the children make the soldiers both popular and trusted, thereby preserving their safety. According to its website, the program has received and distributed over one million toys and hundreds of school supplies to the children in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo since its inception. Because of the loyal relationships with its donors, MERS/Goodwill is asking for the community’s help. Beginning August 18, the stores in Brentwood and Washington will be collecting Beanie Babies® and other small toys to send to the program’s headquarters in Evansville , Indiana . "This is a natural partnership for us," said MERS/Goodwill’s Chief of Staff, Dave Kutchback. "We are more than happy to offer our donors and shoppers the opportunity to contribute to an effort that continues to be of utmost importance in the hearts of all Americans…keeping our soldiers safe." In both retail locations, the toys will be collected in a marked box inside the store near the entrance. In addition, donor attendants will collect toys at the donation sites located behind the stores, but donors must clearly identify the items going to the program in a separate bag or other storage container. The Brentwood store is located on 9116 Manchester, Brentwood, Missouri, 63144. The Washington store is located on 2030 Phoenix Center Drive, Washington, Missouri, 63090. MERS/Goodwill is a non-profit agency that provides for the vocational needs of individuals who have barriers to employment through disability or economic disadvantage. It operates 22 rehabilitation centers serving more than 10,000 people from 50 counties in the bi-state region.
