"Red Light" Cameras Installed PDF Print E-mail

Red Light Camera at Hwy 100 & Jefferson/Hwy A

Two stoplights in Washington, Missouri are now equipped with "red light" cameras.  The cameras take photographs of drivers who fail to obey the traffic signals.  The cameras are installed on Highway 100 at Highway 47 and Route A and are set up to monitor east/west traffic only.

According to Kenneth Hahn, Chief of Police, the equipment is "about ready to go".  Chief Hahn indicated there had been concerns about the flashing that is occurring at the intersections.  He indicated that at this time, final testing and setup is taking place.  Once the cameras are activated, the flashing indicates only that a picture was taken.  Pictures are taken of instances which are "remotely close to being a violation".  The Chief re-iterated that all pictures are reviewed by the department to determine whether a violation did, indeed, take place.  Tickets will only be issued when the department is able to confirm that a violation did occur.

The slow-motion video below is of the Hwy 47 & Hwy 100 intersection in Washington, Missouri. You can see the camera's flash in the upper-righthand corner of the video.

Fines for violations caught by the cameras are $75.50, plus $22.50 in court costs.  This total, $97, is the same fine that is assessed when a traffic officer issues a ticket for the same offense.

Also discussed is the addition of right turn signals on Highway 100 eastbound and westbound at Highway A and Jefferson.  The picture below shows the right turn signal going west on Hwy 100 at Jefferson.  Drivers may turn right only after coming to a stop behind the white line and verifying that it is safe to proceed into the intersection.

The picture below shows the same intersection, however the right turn signal shows a green arrow.  With the green arrow lit, a driver may make a right turn without stopping.
