Council Tables Ordinance To Repeal New Pseudoephedrine Law |

During a 4-plus hour meeting of the Washington, Missouri City Council Monday evening, the Council ultimately voted 4-3 to table an ordinance that would have repealed the anti-meth ordinance passed two weeks ago. On July 6, the City Council passed an ordinance which prohibits the sale of products containing ephedrine and pseudoephedrine without a valid prescription written by a Missouri licensed physician and filled by a Missouri licensed pharmacist. Three days later on July 9, the ACLU of Eastern Missouri delivered a letter to the city requesting that the Council repeal that ordinance at their July 20 meeting. In that letter, the ACLU of Eastern Missouri stated "please take immediate action to cause the repeal of the ordinance regulating OTC medication at your next meeting on July 20, 2009". The letter continued, "While we would like to avoid engaging in litigation with your City, we take this matter very seriously and will explore all available options".By voting to table the repeal ordinance, the City Council will now revisit the possible repeal in its next meeting on August 3. Voting to table the ordinance were Councilpersons Witt, Midkiff, Meyer and Rhodes, who made the motion to table the ordinance; voting against were Buddemeyer, Groff and Mohesky.
